What is IRS Form 2290?
IRS Form 2290, officially titled “Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return,” is a federal tax form used to report and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). This tax applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are used on public highways.
The HVUT is an annual tax that helps fund the Federal Highway Trust Fund, which pays for highway construction and maintenance across the United States. When you file Form 2290 online and pay the tax, you receive a stamped Schedule 1 as proof of payment—a document required for vehicle registration, plate renewal, and crossing international borders.

VIN Corrections on Form 2290
A 2290 VIN correction is needed when you've made an error in the Vehicle Identification Number on a previously filed Form 2290. Common VIN errors include transposed characters, typos, or using a partial VIN.
When to File a VIN Correction:
- ⚠️DMV rejected your registration due to VIN mismatch
- ⚠️You discovered a typo after receiving your Schedule 1
- ⚠️DOT inspection found VIN discrepancy
- ⚠️Border crossing denied due to incorrect VIN
How to Correct a VIN:
- Log into your Send2290 account
- Select “VIN Correction” as your filing type
- Enter the incorrect VIN and the correct VIN
- Submit the correction to the IRS
- Receive your new stamped Schedule 1 with the corrected VIN
Important: VIN corrections do not require additional tax payment—you're simply correcting the vehicle identification on an already-paid return. There is typically a small filing fee.
Form 2290 Amended Returns (Weight Increase)
A 2290 amended return is required when your vehicle's taxable gross weight (TGW) increases during the tax period, moving it into a higher tax category. This is different from a VIN correction.
When to File an Amended Return:
- 📈You added a heavier trailer configuration
- 📈Vehicle modifications increased gross weight
- 📈You now haul heavier loads exceeding original TGW
- 📈A suspended vehicle exceeded 5,000 miles
Amended Return Tax Calculation:
When filing an amended return for a weight increase, you pay the difference between the tax at the new weight category and what you already paid, prorated for the remaining months in the tax period.
Example: Original filing at 72,000 lbs ($474) → Weight increased to 75,000 lbs ($550) in October
Additional tax = ($550 - $474) × (9 months remaining / 12 months) = $57 additional tax due
Suspended Vehicles (Under 5,000 Miles)
A suspended vehicle is a highway motor vehicle that you expect to operate 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. Suspended vehicles must still be reported on Form 2290, but no tax is due.
Standard Vehicles
5,000 miles
If you operate 5,000 miles or less on public highways, you qualify for suspended status with $0 tax.
Agricultural Vehicles
7,500 miles
Qualified agricultural vehicles get a higher mileage threshold of 7,500 miles for suspended status.
⚠️ Exceeding the Mileage Limit
If a suspended vehicle exceeds the mileage limit during the tax period, you must file an amended Form 2290 and pay the full HVUT tax for that vehicle. The tax is due by the last day of the month following the month you exceeded the limit.
Form 8849 – HVUT Credit Claims & Refunds
IRS Form 8849 (Claim for Refund of Excise Taxes) Schedule 6 is used to claim a credit or refund for HVUT paid on Form 2290. You may be entitled to a refund in several situations.
When to File Form 8849 for HVUT Credit:
- 💰Vehicle sold: Claim credit for remaining months if vehicle was sold before the tax period ended
- 💰Vehicle destroyed: Total loss, theft, or complete destruction of the vehicle
- 💰Vehicle stolen: Claim credit for months after the vehicle was stolen
- 💰Low mileage: Vehicle used 5,000 miles or less during entire tax period
- 💰Overpayment: You paid more HVUT than required
Note: You can also claim a credit on a subsequent Form 2290 instead of filing Form 8849 for a refund. This applies the credit to your next year's tax liability.
