Where Illinois wants your Schedule 1
Illinois requires vehicles at 55,000 pounds or more to show proof of payment of the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax when the vehicle was purchased more than 60 days prior. A photocopy of the receipted Schedule 1 is acceptable, but the VIN must match the registration application and the IRS accepted stamp or e-file watermark must be visible.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
A reduced-fee plate for trucks that barely leave the yard
Illinois offers Mileage Weight Tax registration — a reduced-fee plate class for low-mileage second-division vehicles operated solely within Illinois, with a mileage cap set by combined gross weight and a surety bond per plate. Reporting forms are due to the Commercial & Farm Truck Division annually or registration is revoked. Note this is a registration class, not a weight-distance tax like Kentucky’s or New York’s.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Illinois
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Illinois that is handled by Secretary of State Commercial & Farm Truck Division, IRP Section (217-785-1800). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
