Frequently asked questions
When are IFTA quarterly returns due?⌄
The last day of the month following each quarter: April 30 for January–March, July 31 for April–June, October 31 for July–September, and January 31 for October–December. When a due date falls on a weekend or holiday, it generally moves to the next business day. Returns are due every quarter even with no taxable miles — a zero return still must be filed.
When is Form 2290 due?⌄
The tax period runs July 1 through June 30. For vehicles in service in July, the return and tax are due by August 31. For a truck first used in any later month, the deadline is the last day of the month following the month of first use — buy a truck in October, and the 2290 is due November 30.
What is the UCR deadline?⌄
Unified Carrier Registration for the coming calendar year opens October 1, and enforcement begins January 1 — so registration should be complete by December 31. States may begin enforcement actions against unregistered carriers after the new year starts.
Do these deadlines move for weekends and holidays?⌄
Generally yes — federal filing deadlines that land on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday shift to the next business day, and most IFTA jurisdictions follow the same rule. The tracker above counts to the nominal statutory date; when it lands on a weekend, you have until the next business day.
Are IRP renewals on this calendar?⌄
No, deliberately — IRP (apportioned plate) renewal dates are set by your base state and vary by carrier, often staggered by month. Check your base jurisdiction; our state-by-state directory covers where 2290 proof fits into each state’s IRP process.
