Form 2290 by State: Where Each State Wants Your Schedule 1

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is federal and identical everywhere β€” but proving you paid it is a state matter, and the states do it differently. Some register heavy trucks centrally; others send you to a county office. Some layer their own mileage taxes and emissions checks on top. Find your state below.

Quick Answer

Every state requires proof that the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax was paid before it will register a vehicle at 55,000 pounds or more β€” that proof is your IRS-stamped or e-file-watermarked Schedule 1. What changes by state is where you present it (a central DMV versus a county tax office), which agency handles apportioned plates, and what additional state taxes or checks apply alongside it.

What is identical in all 50 states

The tax itself is federal, so none of this varies by where you register:

  • The threshold β€” a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
  • The tax period β€” July 1 through June 30, with returns for vehicles in service in July due by August 31, and otherwise by the last day of the month after first use.
  • The e-file mandate β€” required when you report 25 or more taxed vehicles.
  • The suspension limits β€” 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) means no tax, but you still file and still receive a Schedule 1.
  • The proof β€” an IRS-stamped Schedule 1, or the e-file watermarked version, which comes back within minutes of IRS acceptance.

State rules govern the registration side: who checks the Schedule 1, at which counter, on what renewal cycle, and what else they want to see at the same time.
