Where Massachusetts wants your Schedule 1
Registration is handled centrally by the RMV, and its IRP checklist calls for proof of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax β Schedule 1, Form 2290 β for vehicles at a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The federal filing itself goes to the IRS; the Schedule 1 that comes back is what the Registry wants to see.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Your town bills you separately, every year
Massachusetts levies an annual motor vehicle excise assessed by the local board of assessors and collected by the city or town β not the Registry. Under M.G.L. c.60A it runs at twenty-five dollars per thousand of valuation with a five dollar minimum, against a statutory depreciation schedule that steps down to 10% of list price from the fifth year onward.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Massachusetts
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Massachusetts that is handled by RMV International Registration Plan Section, Quincy ((857) 368-8120). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal β an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
