The Georgia Trucking Portal: Online-Only IRP

Quick Answer

The Georgia Trucking Portal (cmv.dor.ga.gov/gaenterprise) is the Department of Revenue’s online system for IRP, IFTA, permits, and heavy in-state commercial registration — and it is the ONLY way to do Georgia IRP, which has been electronic-only since January 1, 2018 (county tag offices cannot process it). Intrastate trucks under 26,000 pounds stay with the county tag office; 26,001 pounds or more, or anything interstate, goes through the portal. At 55,000 pounds, Georgia requires the IRS-receipted Schedule 1 with the watermark on every page.

Georgia splits commercial registration at a bright line: vehicles traveling only in Georgia under 26,000 pounds register at the county tag office where the business is located, while vehicles at 26,001 pounds or more — or crossing state lines — run through the Georgia Trucking Portal online. The DOR is blunt that IRP registrations cannot be processed at county tag offices or even its own Southmeadow office.

The portal (with its "EZ IRP" new-account system, live since July 2023) is efficient once you know its calendar — and its penalties, which are mandatory rather than discretionary.

What runs through the portal

The Trucking Portal at cmv.dor.ga.gov/gaenterprise handles IRP registration and renewals, IFTA, permits, and in-state commercial registration for the heavier weight classes. New IRP applications get a 3-to-5-business-day review after submission. The Motor Vehicle Division contact center answers at 1-855-406-5221.

Renewals staggered by your name — with mandatory penalties

Georgia assigns IRP expiration by name: business accounts by the first letter of the business name, individual accounts by the first letter of the last name — A–B expires at the end of January, C–D February, on through X–Z in December, each with a two-month filing window before it.

The penalties are automatic: a mandatory 10% late-filing penalty if the renewal is filed during the expiration month, and a mandatory 25% late-payment penalty if the invoice is paid after the month ends. Renewal mileage must be actual July-to-June distance — no estimates, no rounding, no Georgia-only figures — and you cannot add vehicles or change the physical address during a renewal.

Non-IRP heavy trucks (26,001 pounds to the maximum) renew at the county in a December 1 – February 15 window instead, with quarter-prorated fees for mid-year starts.

Georgia’s 2290 checklist

Georgia publishes an actual checklist for HVUT proof, and its four tests are where registrations fail: each page of the 2290 must carry the IRS payment-received watermark or e-file stamp; each page must show the correct July 1–June 30 period; the VINs must match the vehicles being registered; and tax-suspended vehicles must still file and provide proof of the suspension.

Which year’s return works depends on the month: registrations in July through September may show the prior or current period’s 2290; October through June, only the current period. A bill of sale dated within 60 days of the application registers a new purchase without proof.

Separate from registration fees, Georgia charges a Heavy Vehicle Highway User Impact Fee — $50 a year at 15,500–26,000 pounds GVWR and $100 at 26,001 and up, due at initial registration and every renewal. It applies to farm vehicles too, but not to IRP-registered vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Georgia IRP at a county tag office?
No. Georgia IRP has been mandatory-electronic since January 1, 2018, and the DOR states plainly that county tag offices cannot handle IRP registrations or act as service providers — the Southmeadow MVD office in Atlanta cannot process it either. The Trucking Portal is the only path.
When does my Georgia IRP registration expire?
By your name’s first letter: A–B at the end of January, C–D February, E–F March, and so on through X–Z in December (business accounts use the business name; individuals use the last name). Your filing window opens two months before, and the 10% and 25% late penalties are mandatory.
Why did Georgia reject my 2290 printout?
Most often the every-page rule: Georgia requires the IRS watermark or e-file stamp — and the correct tax period — on each page of the 2290, not just the first. A crisp reprint of the full watermarked PDF from your e-file account usually cures it. VINs must also match the vehicles being registered exactly.
Does a suspended (Category W) vehicle still need paperwork in Georgia?
Yes — Georgia’s checklist says tax-suspended vehicles are still required to file and provide proof of either tax paid or suspension for the period. The suspension Schedule 1 is the proof.
