Where Arizona wants your Schedule 1
ADOT requires Form 2290 for all commercial vehicles with a declared gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, and wants either a copy of the Schedule 1 validated by the IRS or a copy of the Schedule 1 as filed together with a copy of the cancelled check. Either version must include the VIN.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Raising your declared weight does not trigger it immediately
Arizona is unusually specific about timing: a commercial vehicle already registered at 55,000 pounds or less that chooses to increase its declared gross weight to 55,000 or more is not required to submit Form 2290 at that moment — the form is required only at the vehicle’s next renewal. Arizona also charges a Vehicle License Tax in place of personal property tax.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Arizona
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Arizona that is handled by ADOT MVD Specialized Registration Services (Full Reciprocity Plan) (602-712-6775). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
