Arizona folded its motor-carrier systems into the state’s consumer portal: AZ MVD Now handles IRP accounts, vehicle changes, invoice payments, document uploads, IFTA filings and renewals. The migration retired the old mCarrier site in 2023 — and business accounts get access through a designation form rather than simple signup.
Getting set up
Prerequisites before the application: an active USDOT number and operating authority, Arizona Corporation Commission registration for entities, and proof of an established place of business — virtual offices are not accepted — or Arizona residency (two proofs for IRP, three for IFTA). The application set runs through ADOT’s numbered forms (IFTA/IRP application, apportioned registration application, record-keeping agreement, leases and POAs as needed).
Portal access splits by type: individuals activate directly at azmvdnow.gov, while businesses complete the AZ MVD Now Administrator Access Designation Form and email it to mvdmcs@azdot.gov, with credentials arriving in one to two weeks. Plan the lead time before renewal season.
The 2290 rule and the renewal blocks
Arizona’s required-documents list is short and clear: a copy of IRS Form 2290 for each unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of 55,000 pounds or greater, for both IRP and the nonresident Interstate Registration program. The state publishes no additional format rules, so the federal standard — the receipted or e-file-watermarked Schedule 1 — is the working answer.
Renewals are annual with invitations about 60 days before expiration, and Arizona polices the distance data: you cannot renew online if you declare zero miles in Arizona or miles in Arizona only, and renewals require all IFTA reports filed and MVD debts satisfied first. A 60-day Temporary Authorization Permit bridges transactions when the title or MCO is not yet in hand.
Arizona oddities worth a margin note: apportioned vehicles are exempt from Arizona emissions testing; entering the state without valid fuel credentials is a class 2 misdemeanor; and Mexico-based interstate operators are limited to a few miles beyond specific border ports of entry.
