Where Maryland wants your Schedule 1
Maryland requires proof of payment of the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax for vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, and lists IRS Form 2290 among the documents needed to register commercial vehicles such as dump trucks. The requirement is waived for newly acquired vehicles registered within 60 days of purchase.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
A state income tax credit for tractor owners
Maryland offers something almost no other state does: owners of Class F tractors may apply for a state income tax credit of $400 per vehicle, capped at $10,000 per taxpayer. Maryland farm classes also come with a geographic limit — farm vehicles are restricted to the farm or to highway travel within a 25-mile radius.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Maryland
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Maryland that is handled by MDOT MVA International Registration Program (410-768-7000). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
