Where Tennessee wants your Schedule 1
Routine registration in Tennessee runs through your local county clerk, while IRP is handled by the Department of Revenue. For all new IRP accounts and renewals the state wants a current, stamped copy of the Schedule 1 when the vehicle has a gross combined weight of 55,000 pounds or more and was purchased more than 60 days before the application — and the same requirement triggers when you upgrade from 54,999 pounds or less to 55,000 or more.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
A weight upgrade can trigger the filing
Tennessee explicitly names the upgrade case: moving a vehicle’s declared gross combined weight from 54,999 pounds or less up to 55,000 or more brings the Form 2290 requirement with it, even mid-registration. Tennessee also runs IRP registrations, renewals and all IRP transactions entirely online through TNTAP.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Tennessee
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Tennessee that is handled by Tennessee DOR Motor Carrier / Vehicle Services, via TNTAP (615-399-4265). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
