Where Wisconsin wants your Schedule 1
WisDOT applies the requirement to vehicles operating at a gross weight of 55,000 pounds and greater, and publishes one of the clearest acceptable-proof lists in the country: a Schedule 1 stamped PAID or RECEIVED by the IRS, the complete Form 2290 package plus both sides of the cancelled check, or an electronic receipt showing the dated e-file watermark.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Exempt vehicles still owe paperwork — and you can register by the month
For vehicles the IRS exempts from HVUT payment, Wisconsin requires a statement of exemption submitted with the registration renewal — being exempt does not mean submitting nothing. Wisconsin also lets heavy trucks register for a full year, quarterly, or for consecutive months, which is a genuine cash-flow option for seasonal operations.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Wisconsin
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Wisconsin that is handled by WisDOT Motor Carrier Services (WisCRS) ((608) 266-9900). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
