Where Texas wants your Schedule 1
Texas registers vehicles through its 254 county tax assessor-collector offices, so that is where an intrastate trucker presents the stamped Schedule 1. TxDMV requires proof of HVUT payment when licensing vehicles at 55,000 pounds or more gross or combined gross weight, and an apportioned (TxIRP) renewal submitted without the Schedule 1 is rejected.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
A 60-day window on newly titled trucks
Proof of HVUT payment is required within 60 days of the date shown on the title assignment for newly titled units. Texas farm plates cost 50% of the standard fee but do not waive the federal tax.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Texas
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Texas that is handled by TxIRP, managed online through TxFLEET (1-888-368-4689). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
