Colorado’s model is a clean split: counties own intrastate commercial registration and all titling, while the State DMV’s IRP unit in Lakewood owns interstate work — on an appointment-only basis, with myDMV handling account creation and updates online. IFTA lives separately with the Department of Revenue’s taxation side.
Who goes where
Commercial vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross (alone or in combination) or with three or more axles, traveling in two or more jurisdictions, register under IRP with the State DMV — appointments selected as "IRP Originals" or "IRP Supplements/Renewals" at the Lakewood office. Everything intrastate stays at the county: titling for all commercial vehicles and registration for Colorado-only trucks, where vehicles at 10,001 pounds and up have needed a DOT number (and a DOT/EIN/SSN on file) since May 2024.
The grace month — and the records rule
Colorado publishes an unusually forgiving renewal rule: carriers get the entire month following their expiration date to renew and receive permanent credentials. A July 31 expiration means all of August to finish. Do not confuse grace with slack elsewhere — Colorado expects IRP mileage records kept for four and a half years per qualified vehicle.
On the federal tax, Colorado publishes no state-specific 2290 wording on its accessible pages — the federal rule simply applies: at 55,000 pounds or more taxable gross weight, bring the current stamped or e-file-watermarked Schedule 1, and confirm specifics with the IRP unit at 303-205-5608.
Practical note for visitors: the IRP counter is appointment-only — walk-ins are not served. Book online, choose the right appointment type, and bring the full document set; the Lakewood office at 3265 S Wadsworth Blvd is the only state IRP location.
